House Rewiring on the Hibiscus Coast and North Shore

Old wiring is one of those jobs you cannot see until it becomes a problem. AJ Electrical is a family-run team of Registered Master Electricians who have rewired homes across the Hibiscus Coast, North Shore and Rodney since 2011, from older villas to modern family homes. We check what you have, tell you honestly whether it needs a full rewire, part of the house or a smaller fix, and give you a free estimate. Give us a call on 09 390 9884.

Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring

If your home was built before the 1970s, it may still have old rubber or cloth-insulated wiring that has broken down with age. Other signs are a fuse box rather than a modern switchboard, circuits that trip often, lights that flicker or dim, power points or switches that feel warm, and a burning smell near an outlet. If you notice any of these, it is worth getting the wiring checked by a Registered Master Electrician. We will tell you straight whether a rewire is needed, and we will never sell you one you do not need.

Full rewire of a modern home in Albany

Full Rewires and Partial Rewires

Not every home needs rewiring from top to bottom. Sometimes the main circuits are sound and only one part of the house, an older extension or the kitchen, needs new wiring. Other times a full rewire is the safe answer. We have done both, including a full rewire of a modern Albany home and the rewire and switchboard replacement on the villa pictured above. A rewire is also the right time to add extra power points, LED lighting or data, so it is worth telling us what you would like while the walls are open.

Rewiring During a Renovation

If you are renovating, talk to us before the walls are lined. Rewiring while the framing is exposed is quicker and less disruptive than doing it later, and it lets us plan your power points, lights and switches around how you will actually use each room. We work in with your builder and the other trades so the electrical stays on programme, and we usually look at the switchboard at the same time, because an older board often cannot handle modern appliances.

Clear Pricing and Proper Paperwork

Every home is different, so we give you a written estimate for a rewire rather than a one-size price. The cost depends on the size and age of the house, how easy the access is under the floor and in the ceiling, and how much you want done. When the work is finished you get a Certificate of Compliance, so you have the paperwork for your records, your insurer and any future sale. Clear costs upfront, fair prices for quality work, and no hidden surprises.

Common Questions

The common signs are a home built before the 1970s, old rubber or cloth-insulated wiring, a fuse box instead of a modern switchboard, regular tripping, flickering lights, and warm power points or switches. A burning smell near an outlet should be checked straight away. As Registered Master Electricians we can inspect your wiring and tell you honestly whether a full rewire is needed or whether a smaller fix will do. Call us on 09 390 9884 for a free estimate.

The cost depends on the size and age of the home, how easy the access is, and how much you want done, so we give you a free written estimate rather than a one-size price. Rewiring one or two rooms during a renovation is a smaller job than a full rewire of an older home. Whatever the size, you get clear costs upfront and no hidden surprises. Call us on 09 390 9884, tell us about your home, and we will give you an honest idea of cost.

Yes. If the wiring in most of the house is sound, we can rewire only the part that needs it, such as an older extension, a kitchen or a bathroom. We check the rest of the wiring and the switchboard at the same time, so you know where things stand and nothing is left that should have been sorted. If we think a full rewire is the safer answer, we will explain why and let you decide.

We take care to keep the disruption down. We plan the job with you before we start, protect your floors and furniture, tidy up as we go, and take the rubbish and old wiring away with us. Leaving your home tidy is one of the things our customers mention most. Rewiring does involve some access through walls and ceilings, and we will talk you through what to expect for your home before the work begins.

Often, yes. If your home still has an old fuse box, replacing it with a modern switchboard and RCDs is one of the most useful safety upgrades you can make, and doing it alongside a rewire saves a second visit. A new board also gives you capacity for a heat pump, induction cooktop or EV charger. We will look at your board as part of the rewire estimate. See our Switchboard Upgrade page for more.

Yes. When a rewire is finished we issue a Certificate of Compliance, which confirms the work was carried out by a registered electrician and meets New Zealand standards. Keep it with your house records, as your insurer may ask for it and it is useful when you sell. Every rewire we do is carried out by our Registered Master Electricians.
